Thread Turning, Thread Milling & Grooving

Carmex Thread Mills, Threading Inserts & Precision Cutting Tools

Shop Carmex Precision Tools at Suncoast Precision Tools for CNC thread turning, thread milling, grooving and small-part machining. The Carmex line includes laydown threading inserts, solid carbide thread mills, indexable thread milling cutters, boring tools and matching tool holders. Compare inch and metric thread standards, cutting geometries, carbide grades and tool dimensions to select the tooling for your application.

Laydown Threading Inserts & Holders

Carmex laydown thread turning inserts cover internal and external threading with partial-profile and full-profile designs. Choose 55-degree or 60-degree partial profiles for the listed pitch range, or a full-profile insert for a specific thread standard and pitch. Compare right-hand and left-hand configurations, insert size, carbide grade and compatible holders before ordering.

Solid Carbide & Mini Thread Mills

Carmex Mill-Thread Solid Carbide tools cut threads on CNC machines using helical interpolation. Mini Mill-Thread tools address small-diameter threading, while other series offer different cutting lengths, flute geometries and coolant options. Match the thread profile, pitch, minimum bore diameter and usable reach to the job; internal and external capability depends on the individual tool.

Indexable & Spiral Thread Mills

Mill-Thread Indexable cutters pair replaceable carbide inserts with dedicated holders for CNC thread milling. Spiral Mill-Thread uses spiral-fluted holders to support smooth cutting, while Slim MT provides another indexable option. Check insert length, cutting diameter, thread length and holder compatibility. Some profiles support both internal and external threads; ISO and UN profiles require the appropriate application-specific insert.

Tiny Tools & Miniature Boring Tools

Carmex Tiny Tools and Mini Tools address precision work where bore diameter and access limit conventional tooling. Depending on the series, options include internal threading, boring, grooving, chamfering and profiling. Compare minimum bore diameter, cutting reach, groove width and shank size. Use the specified holder and keep tool overhang appropriate for the operation.

Swiss Tools & Thread Whirling

Carmex Swiss-Line inserts and holders serve automatic lathes and Swiss-type machines for external grooving, turning, profiling, threading and parting. Dedicated Thread Whirling tooling supports specialized external threading operations on compatible machines. Select the insert geometry, holder orientation and machine interface for the part, especially when clearance and tool positioning are critical.

Grooving, Chamfering & Milling Tools

Round out the operation with Carmex grooving inserts, CMT vertical milling tools, solid carbide grooving cutters and Mini Chamfer tools. Selected CMT systems support thread milling, groove milling and chamfering with the matching insert. The broader range also includes solid carbide end mills and diamond tooling for designated applications. Compare cutting width, corner radius, angle and holder fit.

Inch, Metric, Pipe & Trapezoidal Threading

Carmex catalog options include ISO metric and Unified UN threads, Whitworth, NPT and NPTF pipe threads, BSPT, Acme, Stub Acme and Trapez DIN 103 profiles. Other families include specialized MJ, UNJ and buttress threading tools. Start with the drawing's exact thread standard, diameter and pitch or threads per inch. A similar thread angle does not make different standards interchangeable, and the available profiles vary by tool family.

Carbide Grades for Steel, Stainless Steel & Aluminum

Select the carbide grade and coating for the workpiece alloy, hardness and cutting conditions. Carmex offers coated and uncoated grades across its turning and milling families, with designated options for steels, stainless steels, cast iron, aluminum, titanium and heat-resistant alloys. BMA, MXC, BLU, K20 and MT7 are examples of family-specific grade choices; they are not interchangeable recommendations. Follow the selected tool's application chart and cutting-data guidance when choosing speed, feed and coolant.

Match the Insert, Tool Holder & Machining Setup

For thread turning, verify insert size, internal or external use, holder hand, shank dimensions and the required anvil or shim. Thread helix and clearance affect the correct setup. For thread milling, compare cutter diameter, minimum thread diameter, cutting length, reach and the machine's helical interpolation capability. Use the complete Carmex part number when reordering so the profile, pitch and grade match the intended tool.

Carmex Threading & Cutting Tool Selection Questions

What is the difference between thread turning and thread milling?
Thread turning uses a threading insert and holder while the workpiece rotates on a lathe. Thread milling uses a rotating cutter following a helical path on a compatible CNC machine. Choose the process according to the part geometry, machine capability, thread dimensions and production requirements.
Should I choose a full-profile or partial-profile threading insert?
A partial-profile insert can cover a specified range of pitches with the same included angle, but it does not finish the thread crest. A full-profile insert is designed for a particular standard and pitch and also forms the crest. Check the prepared workpiece diameter and the selected insert's specification.
Can one Carmex thread mill cut different thread diameters?
For compatible straight-thread applications, a thread mill can produce different diameters that share the specified pitch and profile by changing the programmed path. Minimum diameter, cutter geometry, thread length and clearance still limit the application. Do not assume every internal, external or tapered thread uses the same tool.
How do I select a tool for a small internal thread or groove?
Compare Tiny Tools, Mini Tools and Mini Mill-Thread according to the machining process. Confirm the minimum bore diameter, maximum cutting depth, shank size and required clearance. A tool that fits the thread diameter may still lack the reach or clearance needed for the feature.
Are right-hand and left-hand inserts interchangeable?
Do not select a turning insert by hand alone. Match the insert and holder for internal or external use, cutting direction and the intended setup. With thread milling, the programmed tool path also affects thread direction; follow the selected cutter's instructions and machine programming requirements.
What should I check before ordering Carmex tooling?
Confirm the complete part number, thread standard, pitch or TPI, internal or external application, tool size, grade and holder compatibility. For grooving and chamfering tools, also check width, radius, angle and cutting depth. Use the Carmex inch interactive catalog or Carmex metric interactive catalog to compare dimensions and application details.
